„Mission: Super Sister“ – Caring for Children, Inspiring the Future
How can we help children understand their bodies, take care of their health, and show empathy toward others? For me, the answer starts with an accessible conversation, setting a good example, and giving every child the opportunity to participate. That is the idea behind „Mission: Super Sister“ – an educational initiative that introduces children to the world of health and the nursing profession through games, demonstrations, and shared experiences.
My name is Petya Koicheva, a nurse and founder of the private nursing practice „ZaraMed.“ I bring to this initiative my many years of experience in anesthesiology and intensive care, my knowledge, and my conviction that a culture of health is built starting in childhood. For me, nursing is a choice, a calling, a responsibility, and a service. „Mission: Super Sister“ is a way for me to pass these values on to the next generation.
My mission is to turn important health topics into lessons that are easy for children to understand and relevant to their daily lives. Through these activities, I encourage them to ask questions, recognize when they need help, and reach out to an adult or a healthcare professional. I also introduce them to the work of a nurse—caring for patients, monitoring their condition, providing comfort during difficult times, and taking responsibility for human life.
The initiative is aimed at children in kindergartens, schoolchildren, and teenagers, with the content tailored to their age. For the youngest children, the focus is on play, curiosity, hygiene habits, and kindness. For students in grades 5–7, the emphasis is on healthy choices, personal responsibility, and the prevention of risky behavior. For students in grades 11–12, I also include career guidance—an opportunity for them to learn about the nursing profession, education, and various paths for professional development.
I am developing this initiative around topics such as the structure of the human body, how the heart works, hygiene, nutrition, physical activity, and emotional well-being. An important part of the program involves discussions about the dangers of smoking, vaping, alcohol, and drugs, as well as non-aggressive communication. First-aid sessions emphasize safety, seeking help, and age-appropriate actions, which are demonstrated through training exercises.
So far, „Mission: Super Sister“ has given me the opportunity to meet with children at preschools in Stara Zagora and at a community support center. I had the opportunity to talk about my profession, answer the children’s questions, and share how important it is to care for and pay attention to others. Another valuable experience was my participation as a medical professional from „ZaraMed“ in „Zoo School“ at the Stara Zagora Zoo – a week spent with nearly 30 children and the zoo staff.
These meetings inspire me to keep going. I’m moved by the children’s curiosity, their desire to learn something new, and their courage to ask questions. Every meeting reminds me that knowledge is most valuable when it is shared with care and love. I want the children to leave with more confidence, useful knowledge, and the feeling that they can be good and responsible—both toward themselves and toward the people around them.
My next goal is to expand „Mission: Super Sister“ in schools in Stara Zagora through themed modules and hands-on activities. I plan to invite guest experts depending on the topic—doctors, psychologists, and other professionals with relevant experience. I also aim to reach out to teachers, parents, educational institutions, and partners who share the desire for children to grow up more informed, confident, and engaged.
If you represent a preschool, school, educational center, or organization and would like „Mission: Super Sister“ to visit your institution, please contact me using the contact information on the website. Together, we can create an event tailored to the children’s ages, interests, and needs.
